Business boost for Scottish accident management firm
A Scottish accident management firm has reached the £1million turnover barrier, despite turning away over 80% of insurance claims.
Accident Claims Scotland has seen a 72% increase in turnover since this time last year, with pre tax profits up 46% to £650,000.
Managing director Martin Haggarty says the recession has made Scots more savvy about money. And ACS has seen a 15% increase in the number of innocently injured Scots coming forward to claim the compensation that they are legally entitled to.
He said: “Before the downturn, only one in three members of public who suffered injuries through no fault of their own came forward to claim compensation, but we’ve seen this number increase over the past year to more like one in two.
“But there are still too many Scots who think claiming the compensation they are legally entitled to is a complicated and expensive a procedure. Accident Claims Scotland aims to try and educate the public that this is needn’t be the case.”
And while Haggarty agrees that the downturn has brought a rise in the number of fraudulent insurance claims, he says that Scotland has been much less affected than the rest of the UK.
He said: “The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reported a 30% rise in the number of fraudulent insurance claims last year - such as the case of one motorist who pushed his own car over a cliff. But the number of seemingly fraudulent cases we decline is less than 10 a month as Scotland does not seem to suffer to the same extent as the North of England or the London area.
“As an ethical company, we do turn down a total of 90 cases per month, but these are mainly because there is no liability that can be established, not because they are fraudulent. Part of the job we do is not fully appreciated by the insurance industry, who fail to realise that ethical companies such as us act as ‘screening agents’ for cases which otherwise might make their way to them, wasting their time and expense in investigating and declining them.”
